This piece was a special commission for a second wedding anniversary. Cotton is the symbol for the second year of marriage – its symbolic as cotton fibers are closely interwoven, much like two peoples lives in the second year of marriage.
This pendant is inspired by the cellulose molecular structure C6H10O5(n), this molecule is a repeating unit. Cotton is 90% cellulose so this was the perfect choice for this cotton themed gift. The sterling silver pendant represents a single cellulose unit. It’s a piece made to be treasured and loved.
These cufflinks were a very unique commission to be given to a post doctoral research associate at Liverpool University. Each link shows a representation of the compound CC3-R molecule.
The cufflinks are made from sterling silver with the molecule hand-cut into the face of the handmade links.
The cufflinks were commissioned by my customer (and long time friend), Gavin, for his brother Marc. They were given to celebrate Marc’s 30th birthday and also his publication in Nature Journal about the CC3-R molecule that he and his colleagues developed. See the online publication at Nature journal here.
Since this project involved such a unique molecule that is built by Marc, neither I or the gift giver, Gavin, had heard of it. We worked together to get the design right for the recipient and enlisted some help from someone who understood more about Marc’s work. (Thanks, Alex!)
I’m pleased to report that the links were a hit.
If you’d like to commission something unique to you, or as a gift, please contact me to talk about your ideas. You can also check out my portfolio to see other pieces that I’ve designed and made with customers in the past.
Red Wine Lovers! It’s almost here!
This is going to be the molecule for the gift giving season this year from Emily Alice Jewellery.
While my dopamine and serotonin collections are always popular, I’m already generating a lot of interest with people who have had an early peek at this new design.
If you are new to my molecule jewellery designs then read below to learn how the resveratrol jewellery relates to the molecule.
This collection will include pendants, earrings, rings, cufflinks, full necklaces and bracelets.
As with most of my collections, each item will be available in sterling silver and also rose gold and yellow gold vermeil. This new collection will also be produced using recycled silver for the molecule sculpture.
The collection will be open for pre-orders in August 2015. Sign up below to get the first chance to buy these. (and perhaps a promotion!)
The diagram below is a simple description of how the jewellery represents the red wine molecule. Molecules are made up of different elements. This molecule is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The spheres on the sculpted jewellery each represent an atom of one of the 3 elements. Still want to know more? Read ‘About the Designs’.
Prices will start from £85 and pieces will ship internationally.
Sign up to be the first to know when these are in the store. My VIPs on this list will get the first chance to buy and take advantage of any pre-order promotions.

A custom order for an ethanol molecule ring. A gift to a chemistry student. C2H6O. Sterling silver. 2013.
Contact me about commissioning something similar or exploring your own ideas.
This chunky and heavy cuff was a custom design with the oxytocin molecule. It was a Mother’s Day gift for a lady who wanted something more chunky and made from argentium.
Argentium is a sterling silver alloy that is less likely to tarnish and is usually 935 silver (sterling is 925).
This handmade oxytocin bracelet was designed to be a cuff that would stand out and look beautiful and bold. The design on the front of the bracelet is a representation of the oxytocin molecule, with the different holes showing each element of the molecule.
The oxytocin bracelet made a wonderful gift for a mother – the hormone is the bonding chemical and is especially present with parental bonds. For new mother’s it’s the hormone that creates attachment and (among many other things) enables mother’s to produce milk.
Here are some images taken in my studio during the making of the oxytocin bracelet:

May 2015 – I’m thrilled to have my Serotonin Earrings featured in the latest edition of Origin Magazine. Here’s me with my copy (and my pair of earrings!).
Origin Magazine is a wonderful and inspiring magazine ‘The Conscious Culture Magazine’ which focuses on yoga, art, humanitarianism and lifestyle. You can find online issues here.
I’m so glad that Maranda fell in love with my earrings and chose them for her Editor’s Picks section.
”Earrings inspired by serotonin molecules – how cool is that? They’re made of precious metal and are a unique reminder to be happy and calm.”
Huge thanks to all at Origin Mag, I loved this issue!
Whenever I have friends or family visit, they always want to have a peek in my studio, sometimes I forget how magical it can be to share what happens behind the scenes. I love my work, but I still forget how interesting it can be for someone who is not a silversmith to see some of the processes. I’ve collected a couple of images to share with you guys as a small insight into what happens at my workbench. I hope you enjoy seeing them! If you do let me know and I’ll keep collecting more for an occasional peek!
Here I am using my pendant motor to polish right into the seams and nooks of this silver dopamine molecule.
Here I’m just about to solder the ear wire to the molecule. I’m using my ‘third hand’ tweezers to hold the earring.
And here is a batch of earrings that I just finished soldering, I even make all the ear wires from scratch and then make sure each loop is soldered to the molecule to be really secure.
And the final polished earrings, this pair are on their way to Canada right now!
I hope you enjoyed your virtual trip to my workshop!
Are you thinking about commissioning a custom piece of molecule jewelry? Below I’ve collected some samples of some designs I have made in the past, these ideas may inspire you and will also give you an idea of the different possibilities that are available. If you have something else in mind for your custom piece then that is fine! Just let me know and we can work on something together. Everything below is fabricated from sterling silver, but I can also offer rose gold and yellow gold vermeil options.
Vasopressin – Custom Pendant
The first piece I’d like to show you is a piece I made as a retirement gift for a very respected researcher. Her work centered around researching vasopressin and I designed this piece in collaboration with her colleagues.
It’s a hand-cut molecule on a flat oval plate with an oxidization to highlight the molecule. Made from sterling silver.
Oxytocin Pendant
This next molecule pendant was my original design for an oxytocin pendant. You can now find the 3d version of my oxytocin pendant in my shop, but this one could give some inspiration for your custom piece. As above it’s a hand cut molecule made from sterling silver.
Dopamine Pendant
Of course you can always commission a new molecule in my 3d style (the style most of the pieces in my shop). These pieces are more sculpted and are solid pieces as this dopamine pendant below.
Caffeine – Custom Pendant
Below is a caffeine molecule pendant the I designed as a project for a VP at a major coffee company. The molecule is deeply engraved or cut out of the flat silver piece.
Remember, we can use these ideas as starting points or as the main design for your special piece. Just contact me and we can begin coming up with some ideas for your molecule(s)!

Just because! I took this picture on a hike at Wallace Falls on Christmas Day. I love it! Do you?
Serotonin is a natural chemical created in the body that acts a neurotransmitter.
That’s a chemical messenger that travels across brain cells and plays an essential role in our everyday life.
The chemical messenger in this instance is Serotonin (some other well known neurotransmitters are dopamine and oxytocin).
Serotonin is mostly associated with controlling our mood and keeping anxiety away. But serotonin can also be found in various parts of the body so it is commonly believed that it is involved in a range of functions.
”Of the approximately 40 million brain cells, most are influenced either directly or indirectly by serotonin. This includes brain cells related to mood, sexual desire and function, appetite, sleep, memory and learning, temperature regulation, and some social behavior.” 1
Serotonin is produced in the brain and also in the intestines. In fact, 80-90% of the serotonin found in our bodies is found outside of the brain and it cannot pass the blood-brain barrier. That means that serotonin used in brain functions must also be made in the brain.
Along with regulating our mood it’s been suggested that serotonin could affect our social lives positively.
”Higher levels of serotonin may help to promote more constructive social interactions” 2
And a very recent study has potentially found a link between serotonin levels and how patient we are!
It seems that serotonin is involved in so many functions and scientists are always exploring more connections, I guess that’s why it’s one of the most commonly known molecules and jewelry (like the pendant above) have become such popular symbols for many of us.
So has that got you itching to increase your serotonin levels? I’ll be posting a new blog shortly about how you might be able to do just that!

This lovely commission left my studio this summer. Designed for a couple of postdoctoral researchers, they wanted a ring each that would also fit together to represent the avidin – biotin interaction.
To give you a simple overview, Avidin is a protein and Biotin is a vitamin. The Avidin is represented by the central cross on the rings (shown in green) when they are placed together.
Avidin can bind up to four Biotin molecules. These molecules are represented by the ring shanks which curve around and join into the valleys of the cross. The ‘S’ and ‘N’ are the initials of the couple.
The shape of the ring shank represents the backbone of the biotin conjugate.
These wonderful pictures were taken by my customer after the avidin and biotin rings arrived and she kindly let me use them here!
As you probably already know, they oxytocin molecule is not for the faint-hearted. We know that it plays a big part in bonding us to the people we love, but did you know that the structure of the molecule is also pretty complicated?
It’s the most detailed molecule in my jewelry collection so when a customer asked me to make a ring in this molecule, I knew I was facing a challenge. And a challenge I was looking forward to! (I’ve made interactive atom cufflinks and spinning rings. I can do this!)
In the end we decided to make a wide band with the design of the oxytocin molecule cut into it. The back of the band was shaped to be narrower for comfort.
It makes a great piece for someone who is not afraid of large rings!
Are you looking for your own oxytocin ring? These are not yet a permanent feature in my shop, but contact me below if you would like to find out more and order one, or design a different style oxytocin ring that is right for you.
You can also take a look at the oxytocin collection in my shop for other items of jewelry. Enjoy!
It’s all about trust, bonding and love. Made for someone very dear to you.
